Taking Effective Notes

WHAT IS NOTES TAKING?
Writing down ideas from lectures and readings in our own words .

WHY WE MUST TAKE NOTES?
  • help us to pay attention in class
  • help us study for quiz/final exam
  • help us to improve our memory
  • help the lecturers test students on how well they captured given information
WHY WE MUST REVIEW NOTES?
  • we lost 80% of what we hear if it is not reviewed within a few hours
  • identify any question for peers, the next class or to ask the professort
  • there is not enough time to absorb all the information given  in class if it's not reviewed on a regular basic
  • think "If I were tested on this lecture tomorrow, would I ace it? " make it so!
WHAT MATERIALS DO WE NEED?
  • loose-leaf paper
  • binder
  • folders with pocket
  • pen, pencils, erasers & etc
BEFORE CLASS
  • review the notes
  • review your reading assignment
  • make sure have materials do we need
  • write the on the top of your notes
  • leave spaces between the lines to add information later
PHYSICAL FACTOR
  • SEATING - near the front & center , avoid distraction
HOW DO WE TAKE NOTES?
  • date and label notes
  • give ourselves space to write

Memory Learning & Improving Concentration

Memory and learning are so closely connected that people often confuse them with each other. For example, you learn a new language by studying it, but you then speak it by using your memory to retrieve the words that you have learned. Memory is very important to all learning because it lets you store and retrieve the information that you learn. Thus, memory depends on learning and learning also depens on memory.

LEARNING PYRAMID

MEMORY VS BRAIN

- Memory is individual ability to store, retain & remember an information and experience. (Computer Software)
- Brain is an organ (Computer Hardware)

ANALOGY COMPUTER

INFORMATION PROCESSING MODEL

Types of memories :
  1. SHORT TERM MEMORY - A potential to maintain in long term .
  2. LONG TERM MEMORY - A potential to maintain in short term .
  3. SENSORY MEMORY - A potential to maintain the sensors of information stimulus .

FORGET & REMEMBER

WHY ALWAYS FORGET?
  • INTERFERENCE
  • TIME FACTOR
  • FINDING ATTENTION
WAYS TO REMEMBER
  • INTEREST
  • EXERCISE
  • REPEAT
  • TRAINING DRILL
HOW FORGETTING COULD ACCOUR
  • did not pay attention
  • did not understand
  • cramming
  • did not have strategies
  • interference
  • test anxiety
IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY STRATEGY
  • massed practice vs spaced practice
  • break reading material down
  • rehearsal-repeat the info many times
  • elaboration strategies
UNDERSTANDING CONCENTRATION

Concentration is focusing your attention on what you are doing. It is important during reading, listening & studying.

CAUSES OF POOR CONCENTRATION
  • lack of attention
  • lack of interest
  • lack of  motivation
  • distraction from others
  • uncomfortable environment
  • physiological matters (illness & tiredness)
STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE CONCENTRATION

Goal Setting

5 STEP APPROACH OF GOAL SETTING

The definition of goal setting is the process of identifying something that you want to accomplish and establishing measurable goals and timeframes.
    For examples :
    1. When you decide on a financial change to save more money and then set a certain amount to save each month, this is an example of goal setting.
    2. When a team of people on a school board have a shared aim to improve education and set goals for budgets and test scores, this is an example of goal setting.
I also have my own goal setting. I really hope that I can achieve my goal setting. The video above is about my plan to make sure that I can achieve my goal. This is my first time doing the type of video.
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING & SUPPORT ME !

Time management is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities . Good time management anables you to work smarter not harder, so that you get more done in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high . Failing to manage your time damages your effectiveness and causes stress .

    Learning Style

    Meaning of learning style .

The term “ learning styles “ speaks to the understanding that every student learns differently. Technically, an individual learning style refers to the preferential way in which the student absorbs, processes and retains information. For my information, there are many learning style that we can use in our life such as auditory, visual and tactile. I'm believe that everyone have their own learning style.

    WHAT IS YOUR LEARNING STYLE?

Percentage of my learning style is :

    ·       Auditory – 30%
    ·       Visual – 50%
    ·       Tactile – 20%

Based on the question that I had answer, I am a visual learner. Visual learners prefer the use of images, map and graphic organizers to access and understand new information.

This is my learning style that I’ve been using :

    • Sit near the front of the class .
    • Write down key words, ideas, or instruction .
    • Use the sticky note as a pocket size notes .
    • Color code things .
    • Avoid distractions during study times .
    • Submit every assignment before the deadline .
    • Always think positive .

DO YOU HAVE ANY STRONG PREFERENCE TO LEARN A CERTAIN WAY ?
IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY ?

Yes, I have strong preference to learn a certain way such as I can study easily while listen to surah Ar-Rahman from Al-Quran . It can be easier for me to memorize a lot of information . As a muslim, we must always recite  Al-Quran everyday or at least once a week . Next, I will go to the library to make a some revision because the place have  silent zone . I like to study which is the place were avoid distractions . Lastly, I like to write notes using a mind maps as my reference material . It can be easier for me to understand about every information that given to me .

HOW WILL I CONTINUE USING MY LEARNING STYLE ? I WILL SHARE HOW MY LEARNING STYLE DOES ALWAYS WORKS IN AN EFFECTIVE MANNER .

As you all know, I’m a visual learner not an auditory or tactile learner. I will make sure that I always utilize the learning style that has been set in the course. First of all, if the lesson is being conducted in somewhere else, I will always attend the class on time. Besides that, I will also ensure that I will sit near the front of the class. As a student, we need to be wise in managing time so that we wouldn’t miss any lessons. Moreover, I will use the mind maps to create some helpful short notes. I use the mind map as one of the learning styles is because it makes it easier for me to remember the important points. I will use some attractive colors to make the note way more interesting and easier for me to understand and revise. At school, some of my friends do use my notes as their reference material. Futhermore, I surely will avoid any disruption during my study time. For example, I will not chat with my friends during lecture because if I do so, I will not receive the whole inputs from the lecturer and will be left behind I will always focus on my learning. I will keep my learning style in future so that I could improve myself especially in English in both speaking and writing wise. I’m not that good in English but I will always try harder to improve myself confidence.
